This story is equal parts sad and strange, especially when you consider that there are a minuscule amount of couples who have been married for 77 years in this day and age. Not too many make it that long, and unfortunately you can deduct one more from that extremely small number.
A 99-year-old gentleman from Italy, known only in court document as Antonio C., is divorcing his wife of 77 years, Rosa C., after he found out that she had been cheating on him.
In the 1940s.
The scorned husband came across letters his unfaithful wife had written to her lover while going through an old chest. Apparently their marriage had fallen on some tough times in the last decade, and the love letters were the straw that broke the elderly camel’s back. Even though his wife admitted the affair, and begged her husband to stay, Antonio C. is having none of it, and is planning on proceeding with the divorce.
Great, just one more guy I have to compete with on the singles scene. Guaranteed that even at 99-years-old this nonagenarian will have better luck with the ladies than I will.
Tumultuous marriage or not, you’d think after being together for nearly eight decades the couple would just stay together for the heck of it, considering that at their age any day could be their last. I hope that before they finalize their divorce, they at least think about the children…or the grandchildren…or the great-grandchildren.
