wwf – the new pdf?

The organisation that we know as the World Wide Fund for Nature has introduced a format called the WWF format, and has labeled it as a new green file format, with the noble idea of trying to save paper – and consequently trees!

The WWF format is a PDF that cannot be printed out. It’s a simple way to avoid unnecessary printing.

The major ‘selling point’ is to save trees and help the environment. Decide for yourself which documents don’t need printing out – then simply save them as WWF.

WWF works with companies and consumers to promote responsible paper use and the option to “Save as WWF” compliments and reinforces other well-established campaigns – most notably the “Think Before You Print” initiative.

To participate in this campaign download the free software to support the WWF format, save your document(s) as WWF and send it out.

Once you install it, in the Print menu of your PDF reader you will get to see a save as WWF option.

The only issue I have, as a writer, is by not letting the page be printed, it may actually impact the environment greater. I mean, by forcing the reader to fire up their computer to read and perhaps reread a document, is actually forcing them to use other resources like electricity etc. I wonder if  a printed page may not be a better idea in the long term.
