A Serbian union official severed and ate his own finger in order to protest nonpayment of wages for workers who in some cases have not been paid for years.
Zoran Bulatovic told Reuters:
We, the workers, have nothing to eat. We had to seek some sort of alternative food and I gave them an example.
Bulatovic told reporters that he decided to cut off his finger with a hacksaw in place of his deputy, a single mother of three, who had volunteered to mutilate herself. When asked if it hurt, he responded that it “hurt like hell.”
The union members from Raska Holding textile factory in Novi Pazar, Serbia, hope that the unpaid debts from the struggling company can be swapped for state owned equity, which would allow the workers to be paid. [AOL News]
