Extreme bill dodgers exit restaurant via 55th-floor balcony

Celebrated chef Shannon Bennett was unamused

Skipping out on restaurant bills is a horrible thing to do – but four men in Melbourne certainly did it interestingly when they ordered four cocktails and exited via a balcony on the 55th floor of Melbourne’s Rialto Tower.

Chef Shannon Bennett explained:
‘I was in the kitchen last night and I had my maitre’d come in white-faced and said there’s someone on the balcony and they’re about to jump.’

And jump they did:

(They) just went to the door shut it on the deck so no one could grab them and jumped.

The men, who entered the Vue de Monde restaurant without reservations (the restaurant requires credit card details to make reservations) were said to have been concealing their BASE parachutes underneath their suits – they made their getaway in a car that was waiting on the ground below.

Mr Bennett denies that the event was an elaborate publicity stunt and explained that the restaurant has since installed safety measures to ensure that there is not a repeat performance. He also added that the restaurant had 16 surveillance cameras and that the footage from each of them would be reviewed – so the extreme bill dodgers in question might want to think twice before sharing the footage from their helmet-mounted cameras via YouTube.
