“Gay” Elephant Draws Ire of Polish Politician

A Polish politician is up in arms after his local zoo acquired Ninio, a male, 10 year old elephant who prefers the company of other male elephants. Michal Grzes, a conservative councilor in the city of Poznan in western Poland, is miffed that the zoo spent 37 million zlotys (about $11 million U.S.) for what he refers to as a “gay” elephant (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

A zoo official says that male elephants are too young at 10 years of age to determine their sexual orientation, since elephants don’t reach sexual maturity until 14, however Ninio has shown a fondness for apple martinis and Bette Midler tunes. [via Yahoo news]
