“The politician is giving out Viagra to gain popularity and votes. I think this is a very bad way of vote-buying” – Sayan Nopha, political accuser.
Thailand has some very strict laws relating to the purchasing of votes. Trading cash, cigarettes or soft drinks for votes is a serious crime, serious enough to buy both the payer and payee up to ten years in prison. One Bangkok candidate (who has not been named) has therefore seemed choose a very liberal interpretation of the law, as he is said to have handed out Viagra tablets instead of cash to potential voters.
According to Sayan Nopcha, whose older brother is running for office as a representative for the People’s Power Party in Bangkok has leveled the accusation, stating that the prescription drug was being freely handed out to male voters. [Firstcoast News via Weird Asia News]
