Politicians changing a light globe? Not a bright idea.

How many Australian politicians does it take to change a light globe? None. Why?

In what has to be a monument to the absurdity of political correctness, or perhaps the lack of common sense in bureaucracy, the Australian occupational health and safety requirements say that light globes can only be changed by a qualified electrician.

Eric Abetz, an opposition polititian related how he was prevented from changing a lightbulb in his electoratal office, being told that the OH&S rules meant an electrician had to be called.

Senator Abetz told reporters

It is just impractical, it’s stupid, most Australians would say if a person is not capable of changing a light globe, chances are they are not capable of running an electorate office. It’s bureaucracy gone mad, it’s a waste of money and the minister should intervene to stop it

Senator Abetz said he had also been told changing a bulb could require climbing a ladder which was a safety risk.
