Rookie 911 Dispatcher Helps Couple Unaware of Pregancy To Deliver At Home

The very idea that a husband, let alone a married couple, has no clue that the woman is pregnant seems almost preposterous.  That is until a story like this comes along.

Seems that a very shocked Ryan Emmons placed a call to 911 after his equally shocked wife Carri began giving birth in their bathtub.  Until that point the couple had attributed Carri’s weight gain to the fact that the couple had quit smoking.

But it gets better, or worse depending on your perspective.  The 911 dispatcher that answered Ryan’s frantic call, Angie Adams, was on her first week on the job, barely 3 days removed from the end of her training.

Luckily for everyone involved the length of Adams’ training was six months long.

The newly-minted dispatcher kept her cool, talking Ryan through the delivery, instructing him to make sure the baby’s air passages were clear, and that the newborn was crying.  The proud father also got to take care of some of the less than glamorous aspects of childbirth, after collecting the placenta from the bathtub so doctors could examine it.

In the end both mother and baby are doing well, and Mr. Emmons is no doubt relieved that a rather large hospital bill will not be heading his way. [Grand Rapids News]
