Richard Coverdale, 24, of North Yorkshire in the United Kingdom was sentenced to three-and-a-half years jail after burglars discovered images and videos of child abuse on his laptop and turned it over to police.
Coverdale’s laptop was stolen during a burglary on August 19, 2008. However, on examining the contents of the laptop’s hard disk, the thieves discovered pornographic images that were disturbing enough that they felt compelled to turn it over to authorities, by way of a tip off.
According to acting Detective Sergeant Chris Stone:
Whilst they were carrying out an offence themselves, it is commendable that they did the right thing and this in turn has helped bring a serious offender to justice.
In the course of the investigation Coverdale confessed to downloading pictures of children and speaking to girls in chatrooms, one of whom he had exposed himself to via webcam a few days prior to the burglary. Following the incident, the girl in question said that she had felt degraded and humiliated and had resorted to self harm.
In sentencing, Judge Brian Forster QC, stated that Coverdale had ‘conducted a calculated scam against the girl’. Coverdale was sentenced to three-and-a-half years jail, banned from working with children for the rest of his life and will be issued with a ‘sexual offences prevention order’.
Since Coverdale’s arrest, a 38-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were apprehended in connection with the burglary. Both were sentenced to 12-month community orders, while the woman must also meet regularly with a probation officer.

That being said, the burglars are still morons. For them to receive lighter sentencing is ridiculous.
This sort of mentality is what allows murderers in prison to pick on the rapists and somehow look down upon them, alleviating their own guilty consciences. Stupid.

I doubt that the burglars were really acting to protect children. There is apparently no evidence that the images were paid for, so there is no reason to believe that the man was fuelling production of indecent images.
One of the major issues for minorities which face discrimination in the UK (paedophiles being one example) is that much of the country’s insecure population feels ashamed about its own weaknesses, so it bullies groups which happen to be in a position of weakness in order to feel empowered. It’s similar to how bullies, most of whom have issues themselves, bully the weakest kid in the school.
I suspect that the burglars saw this as an opportunity to feel empowered and heroic, which must have been a rare opportunity in their lives. To suggest that the burglars are “honourable” or “commendable” is outrageous, in my opinion.
There are always people like you when a story like this crops up. Be glad that a sex offender is behind bars, and be grateful to the criminals who brought him to justice, despite the knowledge that they too would be arrested.

It is ridiculous that burglars, who have no shame about breaking into our homes and leaving a trail of family devastation in their wakes, get non-custodial sentences whilst a man who just liked looking at free pictures had to be imprisoned for a very long time. Always encrypt your computer with TrueCrypt or similar encryption program. If it gets stolen, the thieves have a useless chunk of plastic and aluminium on their hands. I have no child porn on my computers, but every one is encrypted TrueCrypt and complex passwords.
