Male Breast Reductions Up 1000 Percent in Five Years in UK

Business would seem to be booming for UK plastic surgeons, with unprecedented numbers of middle-aged to elderly male Britons going under the knife to reduce breast size.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons acknowledged that after performing just 22 male breast reduction procedures in 2003, they performed almost one per day (323) in 2008. While the majority of patients are middle-aged and older, several teenage boys were counted amongst the patients.

Approximately 40% of British males are affected by some level of gynecomastia, otherwise known as man boobs. The condition may be hormone-related or arise as the result of obesity. In some cases, liposuction is an effective treatment option, in others, tissue must removed and the chest area resculpted.
