Dead Grandma’s Brain Sent to Family

A New Mexico family is suing the funeral home that sent their grandmother’s brain home with a bag of her belongings.

According to the Albuquerque Journal, the family opened the bag to investigate a “foul odor” that had been emanating from within and discovered the brain.

Albuquerque lawyer Richard Valle commented:

Wouldn’t you agree that it was a horrible mistake? No loved one’s brain should ever be part of those belongings.

The family is seeking damages from the DeVargas Funeral Home and Crematory in Espanola Valley. The funeral home’s director, Johnny DeVargas denied that his business was responsible:

All I can say is DeVargas did absolutely nothing wrong and that the family was well cared for. The family was very meticulously cared for and they were very pleased with our service.

The brain has since been buried with the grandmother in question, who died in a motor vehicle accident.
