Arrest costs Sheriff $5.00

Sergeant Mike Kellems of the Indiana Sheriff’s dept was chasing a fugitive recently, but was said to have been made to pay the $5 admission fee to get into the LaPorte County Fair so he could make an arrest.

It would be funny if it was not so stupid.

The Herald-Argus reported that when he attempted to gain entry to the fair to arrest the fugitive, he was stopped by a private security firm at the gate. The security guards insisted he couldn’t pass until he paid the admission fee.

Sergeant Kellems paid the entry and Robert Aubin, 23, was arrested.

Gene Shurte, general manager of the LaPorte County Fair, told the newspaper:

I think there’s some common sense that got overlooked there.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Mr Shurte is the master of the understatement.

One would wonder if he could not have had the security guard arrested for obstruction of justice protection of a criminal with an outstanding arrest warrant?

I would have thought twice about that, had it been me, but then, some just don’t have the mind for such complicated things…

Reminds me of the quote “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe.”
      Albert Einstein

Seems to apply to the guard
