Adopted Man’s Biological Mother Turns Out to Be a Sideshow Performer

It must be a difficult thing being an adopted child, not knowing who your biological parents are, or what you’ll end up looking like when you get older.  There’s always questions and uncertainty when you’re adopted.

It’s easy to understand why many adopted children seek out their biological parents when they get older—to find the missing puzzle piece in their life.

Imagine going through the exhaustive process of researching and tracking down your birth mother and finding out she’s a sideshow bearded lady.  Tell me that wouldn’t knock your socks off.

Just so happens that very scenario happened to Richard Lorenc, a 33-year-old man from Kansas, who sought his biological mother after a back injury led to questions about his family history.  Turns out his mother was 62-year-old Vivian Wheeler, pictured here, a former sideshow performer famous for her lengthy beard, the result of a condition known as hypertrichosis, or werewolf syndrome.

Lorenc also learned that his mother was a hermaphrodite, and most doctors believed it impossible for Wheeler to get pregnant.  Except that in 1977 she did, with Richard William Chambers Jr. being born via C-section.  Richard Sr. took the child away from Vivian after an argument, and despite years searching for her son, never was able to reunite with him.

Until now.

Of course, until DNA testing is done, and the pair are hoping that will take place on the “Maury” show, doubt exists as to whether Richard Lorenc is indeed the same Richard William Chambers Jr. that was stolen from Vivian 33 years ago.  Here’s hoping that the test results are positive, and the couple can go on as mother and son, because hey, everyone deserves a happy ending once in their lives…especially a bearded lady.
