Where’s Waldo Bandit discusses crime in status update, gets busted by FBI

I’m no criminal mastermind or anything, so would-be criminals can take my advice with a pinch of salt – but I will say this: if you are going to rob a bank, don’t do what this guy allegedly did.

Ryan Homsley got himself picked up by the FBI after he posted a status update on his Facebook page saying: “I’m now a bank robber”. The icing on the cake was that he did so using an image of the Where’s Waldo Bandit that had been released by the FBI as his profile picture. He was picked up two days after robbing a bank in Portland, Oregon.

His alleged motive for the crime is actually quite sad. Homsley is said to have needed money to pay for medical expenses. According to friends, the 29-year-old is diabetic and was desperate to pay for his treatment.

So what’s the moral of this story? Don’t rob banks, that would be a start – but if you do, don’t post about your crimes on Facebook. It is a nice little evidence trail for authorities, and well-meaning friends might think that ratting you out is a better alternative to seeing you get yourself into more trouble.
