Scientists at CERN trap some anti-hydrogen for 16 minutes

I’m not sure how good this is going to be for mankind, much like the splitting of the atom in the 1940s, the game scientists are playing is a rather dangerous one. A partly Canadian team of scientists, at CERN, have managed to trap some anti-hydrogen molecules for longer than the expected 1/5th of a second, in fact much longer; 16 minutes.

Their eventual goal, after reflecting pretty laser lights off the anti-molecules “to see what happens”, will be to harness the power created by the merging of matter and anti-matter, in the hope of developing a new, more exotic way to intoxicate the planet provide affordable energy to the world. It remains to be seen whether Google will acquire this new technology, and develop its use into something cool, like a battery for their Android phones, a battery that might last longer than 25 minutes on a full charge.

Lastly I just want to point out a quote from the CBC website: “Canadian funding for the project comes from NSERC (National Sciences and Engineering Research Council, TRIUMF, AIF (Alberta Ingenuity Fund), the Killam Trust, and FQRNT (Le Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies).” I live in Quebec, been here for over 30 years and for the most part I like it here, but let me assure you, nowhere else in the world, can they come up with a less pleasing acronym. FQRNT….looks like someone dropped a cat on a keyboard.
