9 year old gets summoned for jury duty in Massachusetts

A 9 year old Cape Cod third grade student got a summons letter to serve as a juror in Massachusetts, and it’s not even that rare. According to Massachusetts Jury Commissioner Pamela Wood, it happens once or twice a year that a child gets erroneously summoned. Jacob R. Clark vas relieved to avoid jury duty, thanks to his father Robby Clark, who called the county clerk’s office and clarified his son’s birthday.

Things get more complicated if parents ignore multiple summons for their child. If it reaches the level of a notice of delinquency, the parents will have to come up with some kind of proof of the child’s age, such as a birth certificate.

The errors happen when people omit to include their children’s birthdate on the census form, which is then completed by a town official with a fictional date. They are usually encouraged to put in a date outside of the realm of possibility like July 4th 1776. However in Jacob’s case, the official put in 1982 as a date instead of 2002.
