British woman blows money saved for wedding on pet lizard’s chemotherapy

Over time pets quite often become less like a beloved companion and more like a member of the family.  People go crazy when it comes to the care and well-being of their pets, and Lizzie Griffiths of the UK is no exception.

Griffiths and her fiancé, Chris Fisher, were preparing for their upcoming wedding by squirreling away as much money as possible.  Then the bride-to-be’s pet lizard, a bearded dragon named George, suddenly fell ill shortly after Griffiths adopted him.  Turns out George had a tumor in his head, and Griffiths knew she was going to have to do something drastic to save her pet lizards life.

Treatment for George’s condition involved $4,700 worth of chemotherapy, the first of it’s kind in Britain, a sum Griffiths was more than happy to pay.  So, in order to finance George’s radical treatment, the wedding funds were depleted, and the upcoming Fisher/Griffiths nuptials would have to be put on hold.

Thankfully George is in remission.  And what does Chris think of his fiancé spending their hard-earned money on treatment for a sickly bearded dragon?

“They definitely have a special bond. I understand he is her number one.”

Chris is content with coming second to a lizard in his fiancé’s life?  That may be one of the saddest things I’ve ever written.
