Spanish doctor botches abortion, ordered to pay child support to kid’s mother

Well this has to be a first.  Guaranteed that not only abortion doctors, but all doctors will be stepping lightly now that this precedent has been sent.

An unidentified doctor in Spain has been ordered to pay approximately $1,300 a month in child support to a woman who went to the doctor for an abortion that he ultimately botched.  The doc is on the hook for support until the child is 25-years-old.

The woman went for an abortion when she was 7-weeks pregnant, and two weeks later the same doctor told her that according to her scan the pregnancy was done.  Only thing is, she still was preggers with the same child that was to have been aborted.

From The Sydney Morning Herald

The boy was born in October 2010, six months after his mother had gone for an abortion at the city’s Emece clinic.

The operation had been performed when the mother was almost seven weeks pregnant. The doctor told her two weeks later that a scan proved she was no longer pregnant.

She did not return to the clinic for three months and only went back after becoming convinced she must have become pregnant by mistake once more.

A fresh scan revealed, however, that this was the same pregnancy. She was already into her sixth month and past the 22-week limit for abortions in Spain.

On top of the $1,300 a month stipend she is to receive from the bungling MD, the woman also was awarded about $187,000 in damages.

Now that the precedent has been set, wonder how many men will sue their urologists for supposed botched vasectomies?  For those guys paying child support it’s the only glimmer of hope they have left.
