Five Romanians were caught by Austrian police as they attempted to cross the border into Hungary from Austria in three vans full of suspected stolen garlic. The police didn’t have to search the vans to find the stolen goods, all three were packed to the roof with the smelly vegetable.
Police estimate the garlic at 9.5 tonnes. They also say the garlic came from Spain and estimate its value at €30,000 ($38,000). The men — all Romanian nationals — were not named, according to Austrian privacy laws.
Considering last month’s find of an ancient vampire burial site in neighboring Bulgaria, I can’t say I’m terribly surprised by the Romanian’s sudden need for garlic.
