Dirty Text Message Sparks Tribal Violence

A “pornographic” text message sent from a young man to a woman led to tribal violence that left two dead in Papua New Guinea’s southern highlands.

According to Australia’s ABC, the message was sent by a young male member of the Tapo clan to a young female member of the Pipi clan. She was offended and showed the message to her brother.

The brother in question can be presumed to have not approved, as he and his clansmen, armed with attacked the Tapos armed home-made guns, bush knives and bows and arrows, launched an attack on the Tapos.

The initial clash left one dead. The second victim died in a separate but related incident in which he was pulled from a bus and struck with an ax.

Police Commander, Superintendent Jimmy Onopia explained:

Two people have died, several have been wounded, several houses have been burnt down.

He further added that the conflict had ended and that police were working to resolve the outstanding issues between the two clans.
