Boss Forced to Pay Compensation to Man Who Stole From Him

A British man has learned the hard way taking the law into your own hands can backfire.

Simon Cremer, owner of a flooring business, has been forced to pay 13,000 pounds ($20,000 CDN) for “humiliating” one of his former staff when he found out he stole from him.

In October 2008, Cremer realized Mark Gilbert had written himself a company cheque for 845 pounds ($1,350 CDN) and cashed it. Infuriated, he walked Gilbert to the police station wearing a sign that read “Thief. I stole 845 pounds am on way to police station.”

At the station, Gilbert confessed to the crime and was let off with a warning. Cremer wasn’t so lucky. He was charged with forced imprisonment.

The charges were dismissed by December 2008 but that didn’t stop the “thief” from suing his former employer and he won. Cremer had to pay Gilbert 5,000 pound compensation ($7,980 CDN) and 8,000 pounds for court costs ($12,770 CDN.)

Cremer is nonetheless not happy.

“I think it’s absolutely disgusting that he was even able to sue me after he had stolen from me to be honest. I don’t want to give him a penny after what he did, so it really sticks in my throat.”

Nice to see the criminal rewarded once again for ripping off someone signing his checks. Then again, he didn’t need him to do that – he did it himself. Wait now, isn’t that fraud? Oh well, theft and fraud are nothing compared to public embarrassment. [Telegraph]
