"Oh, stop being paranoid. They probably just want to talk."

With the international media closely monitoring destabilizing governments in Egypt and Bahrain, I suppose it’s easy to forget that Somali pirates are still patrolling the Western Indian Ocean.

Evidently the thought hadn’t occurred to Jean and Scott Adam, an American couple on a seven-year sailing expedition to circumnavigate the globe and “seek fertile ground for the word and homes for our Bibles.”  En route from the Indian Ocean to Oman, the crew of four had planned on restocking and refueling in neighboring Djibouti, but were stopped short in the Western Indian Ocean by pirates.

Somali pirates have been regularly seizing ships and holding crews for ransom, including the American freighter Maersk-Alabama in 2009.  The US Navy intervened, killing three Somali pirates and arresting one.  Now the US Navy is monitoring the situation and hoping to keep the yacht from reaching Somali shores.

Moral of the story?  When somebody tells you “There’s pirates that way,” then don’t sail that way.  [Source; Image]
