Gabriel Radzikowski, a Polish immigrant in England, found himself strapped for cash when neighbor and bank director Sara Lilly tried but failed to get him approved for a loan.
Rather than attempting more conventional ways of making ends meet, Radzikowski instead kidnapped Lilly’s Yorkshire Terrier and phoned her, posing as ‘Martin’ and demanding around $800 for the dog’s safe return. Unfortunately, the bank director recognized Radzikowski’s voice and called the police, at which point he resorted to Plan B: Kill the dog.
Fortunately, his ill-planned scheme failed miserably when a passerby saw him drop the dog into an icy pond, then promptly rescued it. Despite charges of blackmail and intimidation, Radzikowski denied any wrongdoing and dismissed the charges as a conspiracy to jail him. He has been sentenced to two years in jail.
On a final note, the dog is named Bilbo Baggins, which is probably the most awesome name for a Yorkshire Terrier since Chewy. [Source]
