Four soldiers walking back to Kualoa Regional Park in Oahu, Hawaii decided to skip motorized transport and go by foot. It was a short distance, after all, and why bother when the weather in Oahu is so beautiful this time of year?
One little catch.
They decided to walk back from Molokii, an island off the coast of Oahu also known as Chinaman’s Hat. Four soldiers were caught in the rising tide on a sandbar between the islands; two died and one was later found and taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. A fourth was found on the shore, apparently uninjured.
On a slightly unrelated note: Chinaman’s Hat? Dude, Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. [Source]

It’s actually not usually possible to take “motorized transport” out to Molokii. The area is generally too shallow and the possibility of hitting a motor on the rock and coral is strong. Most people walk out to Molokii or kayak.
