Vancouver man declares, and brings firearms onto plane, and is later accused of impersonating the police

A Vancouver man, Aaron Haight was traveling from Vancouver to Collingwood, Ontario for a shooting competition. He is not a police officer nor a member of the army or RCMP. He was traveling with a Glock 22 and Baby Eagle 941. Both were legitimately licensed to him and he was given permission by the RCMP to travel with the weapons.

Upon arriving to the check-in counter, Haight told the manager he was traveling with two firearms, he requested the form that he knew he needed to fill out in order to travel with them. He never said he was a police officer but he was nevertheless handed a police form he didn’t recognize. He filled it out without too many problems.

I think it’s important to mention this happened while Air Canada’s customer service agents were on strike.

While going through airport security, he was told not to walk through the metal detector. Instead, he was once again asked for his badge. Haight said he didn’t have one and produced his gun license instead. He was allowed to proceed onto the boarding area. Later when he was boarding the plane he asked if it wasn’t a problem to board the plane with firearms and was simply told to hand his briefcase to a flight attendant who would carry it on board, and store if for him.

But then things went south. About mid-flight, he was asked again to produce his badge and he again told them he didn’t have one. That’s when the pilot sounded the alarm and the police were called. Haight was detained for three hours and could be accused of impersonating a police officer. However he claims he never said he was a police officer, in fact he appears to have repeatedly told officials that he wasn’t a police officer.

This seems to be one of those cases where a person is asked to pay, for someone else’s mistake.
