Nicole Leczcyzynski says she was feeling dizzy while grocery shopping when she decided to eat a sandwich and pay for it at the cash. Thinking it was a great idea her husband followed suit.
When they got to the cashier they unloaded the groceries and got distracted by their toddler and forgot to pay for the eaten food. They paid $50 for their groceries but forgot about the sandwiches.
“It was a complete distraction, distracted parent moment,” said Nicole.
That’s when the store manager got involved by reminding them that they hadn’t paid and calling the police – who subsequently charged the couple with 4th-degree theft. Police tried to arrest the pair at different times so one could stay with their daughter but the logistics didn’t work out and child protective services came into the picture.
Little Zophia could have spent 72-hours away from her parents. Luckily she was returned after 18. Both Nicole and her husband are out on $50 bail and plan to argue against the charges in court.
As for Safeway, a statement issued by the company seems to express contrition:
It appears we may not have handled this matter in the best possible way and we are taking the situation seriously.
Ya think?
UPDATE: Safeway has contacted police to say they won’t be pressing charges. No word on if the manager is still a manager.
