Dorthea Taylor is one feisty woman
Dorthea Murphy may not be young and she may not be big but if you mess with her family prepare for the consequences.
The 85-year old Alaskan woman took on a massive moose, at least 4 times her weight, with a shovel when he attacked her husband. Not bad for a 5 foot tall woman weighing not even 100 pounds.
It happened at the Willow Airport in Anchorage where the couple had taken their dogs to get some exercise. Dorthea was waiting in the truck watching her husband round up their posse of canines when an angry moose came out of the woods.
Her husband, George Murphy, saw the danger and dove into a snow bank to hide. It didn’t fool the moose who went over and started stomping on the elderly man. That’s when Dorthea jumped in.
Grabbing a shovel which was the only thing they had in the truck she pounded the moose with it until he went away. A feet that is more than a little daring (if you don’t believe this try standing beside a moose to see how big they are then imagine one mad.)
Dorthea told reporters from the Anchorage Daily News, “When it turned and started to go off slowly, I hit it with everything I had.”
Her husband is obviously very impressed. “Jeez, that was a pretty hard thing for anyone to do, to walk up on a moose like that,” he said. “Heck, all she had was a shovel.”
