After Panda, Banana is also arrested at Quebec protest

I never thought I’d say this out loud, much less write about it but; Quebec city police have arrested a banana mascot that was protesting against what many people consider to be repressive new laws adopted by Prime Minister Jean Charest’s Quebec Liberals two weeks ago.

Eerily, the banana mascot was handcuffed and dragged away while it was waving to the applauding crowd on Monday night as the rallies continued, kicked off by a 500-strong silent march of lawyers and jurists from the Montreal courthouse through the downtown east end.

Lawyer Marylène Robitaille said the cause has become “much bigger than the student protests.” Indeed, local rallies in smaller communities where people began marching to the beat of casseroles being struck with wooden spoons have considerably increased in popularity, even reaching far remote areas.

I’d like to remind readers that the province of Quebec is the most taxed location in North America with an average income tax level of 48.6% paired with sales taxes of 14.9% and a mandatory 30.3¢/liter (1.21$/US gallon) tax on gasoline. The Quebec government triggered a crisis by allowing simple student protests against a 1600$/year tuition fee hike to get out of hand by ignoring it. The movement has gathered steam and supporters to the point that unplanned provincial elections are possibly in view for this summer.
