Rogue states can no longer hide their stores of weapons-grade plutonium

Physicists have discovered a method of tracking the radioactivity of plutonium, in terms of its location and quantity.

Scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory are now able to determine how much plutonium was originally in a particular location.

The practical applications of this new technique are staggering; for example, if even a small sample of nuclear waste are analysed, they will be able to determine just how much plutonium was enriched in the first place.

If a rogue state such as North Korea purports to only have enriched a small amount of plutonium, it is now possible to verify this claim.

This development has other significant implications, such as finding better methods for disposing of nuclear waste, or power generation for interplanetary exploration.
