New Zealand mother goes shopping, leaves baby locked in car with note attached

babyA New Zealand mother is in a spot of trouble after leaving her newborn baby in the car strapped in its car seat while she went on a shopping jaunt. Don’t judge her too harshly though, she did leave a note with the baby that read “My mum’s in doing the shopping, call her if I need anything,” along with the mother’s phone number.

See, it’s cute because it’s like the baby is doing the talking on behalf of his negligent mother.

A passing couple noticed the abandoned baby and the note, and were soon joined by another couple, all of them in disbelief over their discovery. One of them eventually dialed the woman’s phone number and suggested she come out to her car and tend to her child.

From the New Zealand Herald

A man said he spotted the baby after he and his family parked in the neighbouring space.

It was a shock to see the hand-written note resting on top of the baby’s blanket, he said.

“It was written from the baby’s perspective, and it said, ‘My mum’s in doing the shopping, call her if I need anything’, and it had the cellphone number.

“We waited there for a little bit, wondering if the mum was just going to be two seconds and come back. And my wife said, ‘I’m not going in without someone being here with the baby’.”

Eventually another two passers-by waited by the car, with one of them phoning the mother and telling her to come outside.

So far as anyone knows the baby is perfectly fine, and the mother has yet to be charged with anything. In New Zealand it’s “illegal to leave a child under the age of  14 alone for an unreasonable time or in unreasonable conditions.” If charges are laid the unknown woman could face a $2,000 fine.
Most people are split down the middle on this one—on the one hand this could be just an example of a new mother, not wanting to wake her baby, running into the store quickly for some much needed essentials, while on the other hand people are looking at this as the act of an ignorant and negligent mother who should have known better than to leave her newborn in the car, even for a few minutes.
Either or, it’s a safe bet that this woman won’t be leaving her kid in the car anytime in the foreseeable future.
