If you ever needed proof that we are lost in a sea of pointless rules designed to make traveling (and indeed life in general) more difficult than it ever needed to be, this is it.
The eminent minds at TSA saw fit to confiscate an armed soldier’s nail clippers because he might use them to take over the plane. At this point I would like to point out that he was not armed with nail clippers, he was armed with an assault rifle – which was apparently acceptable because it didn’t have bullets.
The icing on the cake, swabbing all of the soldiers returning from a war-zone for explosives residue… of course they all failed – but not as hard as the guy who kept swabbing.

Its life it happened and there is no reason to dwell on a subject that is irelevant to current day situations. The soldiers being checked is retarded i agree but they are being checked because their are crazy people in this world who think its a good idea to hurt others. According to this blog we should all still be picking at rocks with sticks and talking in grunts…screw the romans, babylonians, persians, greeks, british, irish, russians, french, north africans (carthage), spanish germans, austrians and americans. Screw everyone who has ever done anything to try to do what they thought would be better for their countries and people. America did not start the war with indians, Great Britain, France and Spain exterminated many more indians than america could even if they wanted to. We as americans are a nation of many cultures and many ethnicities. Accept it and move on to making a better future without killing. Use the lessons of the pass to learn, not to dwell on and try to make someone feel bad.

The british, spanish, germans and french conquered most of the world killing or enslaving the local populations. When the “americans” stopped thinking of themselves as English, French, German or Spanish they just kept up the same old traditions and completed the conquering of the Indians. Whilst we Europeans moved onto other countries. Europe didn’t call it quits until the multitude of international pacts turned any European expansion attempt into multi-national wars. Holding on to land outside of europe was proving to be difficult.
All of the countries where the British managed to conquer and wipe out most of the locals (US, Australia, Canada, etc) seem to be the most successful places (without the invasion they would probably still be a lot like Africa). Where the brits partially managed to enforce British culture (India, south Africa, etc) the countries are doing ok and are only a century or so behind britain (India seems very much like Industrial Revolutionary europe). Were the brits just exploited the country without exterminating or subverting the people the countries have done less well and may never catch up. Getting conquered by the french or Spanish seems less beneficial as they seemed to focus more on exploiting than “civilizing”. If the brits had got to Mexico or been as brutal/effective in places like India and Africa as they where in the US we could have a different set of global leading countries.

Hey can you imagine being the higher conscience of planet earth? And then thinking at some stage in evolution that this planet needed robots,(for who knows what purpose). The question isn’t “who is hiring these people” people those TSA Screeners DON’T make the rules. The questions rather, should be “who makes up the rules on what is considered a weapon”

Its not the people hired, its the people that have convinced us we are all about to die if we don’t have the TSA and its stupid rules. Another money making deal for a company with good lobbyists. Give up our freedom for security and we have neither….sound familiar.

TSA is a Purchaser. Who buys scanning equipment and cheap labor from companies that have lobbyists. Or who have friends who own those companies. Or whose head is angling for a shot on the Board of those companies.
It’s also the people hired. The TSA *could* be staffed by people who have some couth and common sense. But when you just won an election and you get to create a brand new bureaucracy, you don’t hire those people. You hand the jobs out as rewards to the people who helped you get elected. So you end up with the kind of people who thought the new president was going to (and should) pay off their car loan.
TSA was created by the previous president. Get your facts straight.
Ah hold up… They didn’t have any bullets in the guns, right? Or any bullets at all? So the guns at that point are as useless as a broomstick in a fight. I understand this. The nail clipper part was a little much, but it’s not as stupid as this article claims it is.
But a gun can definitely be used to bludgeon a victim, which is made even worse when the people carrying the guns are specifically trained to do so. And if someone were to plan a take over, a big step would already be taken care of. ‘We’ll already have guns, all we have to do is smuggle bullets on board.’
I do think this article stressed that part a tad too much, but it’s still a point.

Let a fully trained US soldier beat the hell out of you with an empty rifle then tell me again how it is not a weapon. I could do so much more damage with an empty rifle (or broomstick for that matter) than with a pair of nail clippers.
A fully trained US soldier is gonna be able to beat the shit out of most people whether you let him use the unloaded rifle or not so this is a moot point.

I laughed, because I saw something like this happen (took the soldiers leatherman) when I was watching security in the D.C. airport while I had a two hour lay over waiting for my next plane.

No, it’s just irritating when someone has to go to the lengths of pointing out the errors of others to make themselves feel more correct. If you have a good point, it should stand alone without having to insult anyone to make it valid. Also, to the people who doubt if this is true, you should try bringing clippers on a plane and see what happens. Quite a few people have had them confiscated, as I personally witnessed in an airport in ’04.

That soldier, and every single other soldier on that plane, is trained in using that rifle as a bludgeoning weapon, that is much much more dangerous than anything you could do with nail clippers. They absolutely could take over that plane with unloaded weapons if they wanted to. The funny thing is, if someone came up to me and threatened me with nail clippers, anywhere, I would laugh my head off (probably a few seconds after punching them in the face) but if someone threatened me with a gun I knew to be unloaded I would still be more worried about it than a pair of nail clippers.
There were 233 of them. If they wanted to, they could’ve taken over the plane butt-naked.

While I think some of the methods used by the Europeans were barbaric, they were not the only ones fighting, and what they did holds no bearing as to what we do today.

Many nations did in fact fight other peoples to expand, but in many cases the people they were fighting were a bit more evenly matched. Except of course for colonies, and all former colonies have some pretty horrible pasts to deal with. About the natives being violent or nonviolent, i;d like thespianwhatever to give some examples please, because many of the tribes origionally displaced (mashantucket, wampanoag, nipmuc, etc) had relatively peaceful histories and used methods of negotiation and token warfare we didnt know about at he time (like counting coupe). And finally, to put some icing on everyones hatefest cake: we invaded their land and they fought back. Blaming that on them would be like blaming poland for WWII, and the “i didnt do it so its not my fault” thing is bull because there ongoing injustices that arent being taken care of. (200,000 citizens of the cherokee nation? have no running water…. the reservation we gave them has no reservoirs and they do not have the infastructure to distribute piped in water.) this is a much deeper moral and political topic than any of you morons could understand anway.

I agree that it is a very deep moral debate that none of us of an inferior intellect to you could possibly comprehend, and the Indians got the raw deal. However, one half of my family came from Ireland near the end of the potato famine and lived in Massachusetts and the other from Italy (and that’s all i know. i don’t know when). So, to the best of my knowledge, neither I nor my ancestors can claim responsibility for the Indians. Should the AMERICAN Government have been fair to them? Yes. Is it my fault that they weren’t? No. That’s like going to Germany and blaming some random 20 year old college student for the Holocaust, and it’s his fault that there is not enough Jewish bakeries in Munich. My point it is this. Almost every country has a dark past that it’s people should not be proud of, but does that mean that I should not be proud of who I am because i was born white or of any other color or ethnic background for that matter? The point is preventing weapons from being on planes is pointless and impossible. If they can stop even %80 of all weapons being brought onto an airplane that means I’d have to send 5 terrorists to take over a plane. Four would get caught the fifth wouldn’t.
If security were really an issue they would put a armed guard in the cockpit and have knockout gas canisters in the plane that release in a highjacking. then they would only have to search people for gas masks.
That would be an awesome idea if knockout gas existed in the real world.

tsa also allows metal knitting needles on planes/ through security. apparently people who carry long piercing objects are ok as long as they are used with yarn and not as an improvised weapon also.

The problem with TSA officials is that they aren’t allowed to have a brain. Everything must be by-the-book.
Hypothetical scenario: say there *was* a plot to take over the plane home, and it involved that soldier with nail clippers. Now, he’s on a flight with 232 other soldiers, so it’s a good bet that any plot to take over the plane is going to involve either a bomb or at least ~150 of the other soldiers. (Why? Because someone would have to be really, really stupid to try to hijack a plane with 200 enemy (as they then would be) soldiers on board, even if they’re “unarmed.”) If it’s a bomb, then nail clippers won’t change anything. If it’s 150 other soldiers, you’re probably f***ed even if they’re completely unarmed. So you’re probably safe letting through some nail clippers. Especially given the whole assault-rifle thing.
Also, really, how *can* nail clippers be used to take over a plane?
The real story is that the bad guys are winning, have won. A terrorist succeeds when people are terrorized. A provocateur’s intent is to provoke. “Victory” isn’t as important as having an impact. Just like a soldier the TSA personnel are just following orders. Nothing more and nothing less. They are not there to question the logic of the orders just to enforce them.

I don’t believe it either. Times are a bit different now, but when I was in the Army(1990-1999) and flying around, we didn’t go through security. I cannot fathom that they’d make these guys go through security now. Armed, we didn’t even go through the terminal…we were dropped off on the tarmac.
That depends on what airport you go to. For example I used to travel in many places in the north and southwest and in those ports you would NEVER be allowed on the tarmac without actually getting through security like everyone else. Sorry to say bu it is true. I just came back a few months ago and we had to go through security. You couldnt have clippers, knives, or anything else on the list but we did carry our weapons and for those of us like me, barrel bags. The only difference was we did not have to take off our boots and were only patted down if we set off the detector and wand. Then we got our temp read as this was during the swine flu issue.
Sorry dude, things have changed. You go through security just like everyone else, just not in the regular terminal. The Military does still get on the plane on the tarmac, but you go through security. You even go through security to get on a Space-A flight. All the same rules apply. The only time we did not go through security was to get on the C-130 taking us from Kuwait to Baghdad. But leaving Kuwait to the US we had to do customs and security. We had to empty all of our bags on a table and customs went through everything.
Unfortunately, this is true, and not just for soldiers. When I went to Ireland in ’04, my aunt’s nail clippers and manicure scissors were confiscated. The airline mailed them to her home.

Whether the story is true or not, “they’re just doing their job” is no excuse. Millions of people were murdered by people “just doing their job”. It’s up to the individual to question their job. If everyone did that, the authorities wouldn’t be able to use them in such a way.

At this point I’m convinced the TSA doesn’t exist to improve safety. It exists to keep the people in a constant state of turmoil and panic. It makes it easier to convince society that their safety is actually under attack and you better do exactly what we say or everyone will die because we’re here to protect you and you need us. It’s bullplop. Terrorism, Swine Flu, Magnetic Sun Storms…they are all hyped for this reason. They feed on a human’s natural fear of the unknown.
I agree with you, we were tricked by fear into thinking we are in danger. The government to this day has failed to bring forth conclusive evidence that we even need these extremely infringing security measures. All of these post 911 security measures don’t seem to be actually concerned with helping citizens safely travel from one point to the next either. This has little or nothing to do with protecting citizens from people who can take an entire flight of people hostage with ‘nail clippers’ or ‘box cutters’. It is merely another form of invasion of privacy on so many levels. This is just another way to monitor and regulate the people of our own country in a poorly disguised form.. as a necessity for safety.
It can be argued that the planes on Sept. 11 were not even hijacked or at least the events didn’t happen the way we were told. The official story claimed to identify the 19 alleged suicide hijackers from the four planes, but as it turns out 5 to 7 of the alleged 19 hijackers were found to be alive and well and uninvolved. The evidence is ever growing that we were not told the truth or the full story about the events of 911. The very fact that the government hasn’t told us the whole story about such an important and tragic event, and the fact that the fragments of the story that they have told us either contradict numerous witness reports, numerous expert analyses, or defy physics, etc. enhances the possibility to a probability that they have something to hide. I myself find it very hard to believe that someone could just slam a plane into the pentagon, even more suspicious is the fact that surveillance tapes held by the government that would inescapably prove what actually hit the pentagon haven’t been released to the public almost a decade later. I believe that we were tricked into giving up our rights, the reasons are still unknown but the last thing I’m going to do is silently watch as our rights are continually infringed upon.
In order to have a fully functioning government the people have to have trust in that governing body. The very actions the government itself has taken in such important events makes that a challenging task to say the least.

The way I see it, the problem here (in this particular case) is that the soldiers even had to go through security in the first place.
They shouldn’t have to go through security, because they ARE the fucking security! It is mindbogling to me that the men and women who are sent out to protect their nation agaisnt terrorists, are still not trusted enough to be let on a plane unchecked. Are you kidding me? Soldiers are people too, why shouldn’t they have to go through the same security as everyone else? The fact that they go to other countries to kill people shouldn’t give them special rights.

Wow, where the hell did you fly back into the country? The only time we got checked was through Navy customs in Ali Al Saleem. It’s beyond me what circumstances required you all to go through civilian checkpoints. That’s what happens though when you take military through civilian checkpoints.

This post isn’t about Republicans and Democrats. It’s not about American settlers, or Native Americans. It is about a bunch of Soldiers who went to fight a war and were finally on there way home when they were treated not as the men and women the defend this country and the freedom to write our opinions on blogs such as this one, but as a threat to the very country that they spent the previous 12-15 months being bombed,rocketed, shot at defending. As a soldier, I understand the importance of National Security, but ladies and gentlemen, we are the very core of National Security.
And who instilled those security precautions? Republicans, in an overreaction to 9/11.
The most effective way to improve airport security would be to give every passenger a gun and a full clip upon boarding the plane. I guarantee you anyone trying to hijack that plan would be dealt a swift and deadly barrage of bullets.

I call shenanigans! Why would a soldier be in a position to have to be screened by civilian TSA. Armed soldiers would travel by military transport to and from a military facility, not on a commercial plane to a civilian airport. When was the last time you walked through an airport and saw armed military personnel? Shenanigans!
What I wonder is why these soldiers were on a commercial or chartered flight in the first place/…why were they not transported on a USAF cargo/passenger plane like a c-5 or a c-17 which can be quickly converted to a passenger plane.

As an avid shooter, I always test positive. I am also military and thoroughly enjoy the stupidity of our airline security. It’s the biggest placebo of security fed to the masses.

If we hadn’t nuked them, Americans would have lost the same amount of people in the war that were killed in the bombing. I had a $130 guitar strap confiscated at the airport by the TSA. Because it had bullets on it. Pewter ones. I don’t know how I was going to try and use them, especially since I had no intention of opening the guitar case at all during flight. But I suppose the TSA guy made a great argument – “What if someone on the plane saw this? Are you stupid or something? Man you really didn’t think this one through…” God forbid the one guy on the plane with x-ray vision looks through the case and SEES the safely stored away pewter-on-leather fake bullet strap in a case with – not a gun but a guitar.

I in no way approve of the invasion and attempted assimilation of one culture to another. But do bear in mind this happened everywhere. New Zealand was invaded by Europeans and the Native Maori culture was shunned for a long time, similar to Native Americans. But THIS WAS NOT A WAR WE FOUGHT. This is history. It is there to be learned from, not repeated on the internet. Everyone will walk away from this conversation with a sense that their culture had been disregarded and disrespected, only worsening the matter.
