Today’s irony headline is brought to you by Debra Oberlin of Gainesville, Florida, former president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s Gainesville chapter.
On the morning of February 18th, a patrolman noticed Oberlin swerving and crossing lanes; she failed a field sobriety test and was later breathalyzed at 0.239 BAC, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08. She was the MADD president in Gainesville between 1993 and 1996.
MADD, the nation-wide group which organizes youth events such as Sober Grad, is well known for running advertising campaigns highlighting the dangers of drunk driving – namely injury, arrest, and death. But Oberlin’s case demonstrates that youth aren’t the only demographic susceptible to driving under the influence. Perhaps this calls for an even greater coalition – GMADD, anyone?
