59% of tuna sold in the United States is actually “not” tuna

A non profit organization for the defense of our planet’s oceans called Oceana has made a research claim which shows that 59% of the tuna that’s allegedly in our North American dinner plates, is actually “not” tuna.

Oceana has had 1215 samples of what was supposed to be tuna from restaurants and groceries, genetically tested and even they were astonished to see that high of a proportion turn out to be something else.

What’s more worrying is that 84% of fish that were advertised as “white tuna” actually turned out to be Escolar, a fish that can cause prolonged, uncontrollable, oily anal leakage.

You’ve read that right, it’s a similar effect as from the infamous Olestra based potato chips in the late 1990s, Olestra by the way, is still approved by the FDA for usage in food. (but mercyfully not in Canada)

In Chicago, Austin and New York, every single Sushi restaurant sampled sold mislabeled tuna. Also snapper, another type of fish was found to be mislabeled 87% of the time, this time containing an amalgam of up to seven different types of fish.

So there you have it, now go have a “not-tuna” salad for lunch.
