Mary Hardison, 101, sets world record
When great-great-great grandmother, Mary Hardison, decided to try paragliding tandem last year it had nothing to do with her 100th birthday. It was because her son, 75, had taken up the hobby.
“I didn’t want him to get too far ahead of me, so I decided that I’d go too,” she explained to media.
But that was last year.
This year, when she did her paraglide at the age of 101 she did more than fly through the air. She broke the Guinness Book of World Record for Oldest Female to Paraglide Tandem when she took flight on March 20. It wasn’t anything Hardison intended to do.
“To me, I was just going on a little ride,” said the Utah native, “I had no idea I’d break a record.”
Her first flight was September 2011 and four generations of her family watched from below as she took it with an instructor and while Hardison didn’t anticipate breaking any world records the media coverage could help with her overall mission to get elderly people more active.
“Some people have said, `Well, if you can do that at your age then there’s no need for me to just sit around…My desire is for the elderly to keep on going. Do things as long as you are physically able. Be positive. Friends don’t like a grumpy person.”
